Igbokoda Aircraft Crash: What I Saw and Heard Near the Crash Site in My Community
The swampy terrain around Igbokoda where the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed.
Igbokoda, Ondo State — A tragic aircraft crash has occurred in Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, leaving residents shocked and communities around the area searching for answers.
What makes this incident particularly personal for me is that Igbokoda is my main community, and I live in the area where the incident occurred. The reported crash site is only a few kilometres from where I live, around the Igbogodo/Ikwemola area.
I am sharing this report not only from information circulating online, but also from what I personally experienced after hearing the unusual sound and going out to find out what had happened.
What Happened in Igbokoda?
A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State while on a routine mission between Benin and Lagos.
According to information released by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the aircraft had the tail number NGR 931. Air traffic controllers reportedly lost contact with the aircraft at about 9:13 a.m., after which attempts to raise the aircraft by radio were unsuccessful.
The wreckage was subsequently located close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda, in difficult swampy terrain.
32 People Were Reportedly On Board
Preliminary information released by the aviation authorities indicated that 32 people were on board the aircraft.
- 25 passengers
- 7 crew members
- Total: 32 people
The aircraft was identified as an ATR-42 operated by the Nigerian Air Force. The Nigerian Air Force said the aircraft was conducting a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.
At the initial stage of the incident, search-and-rescue teams were deployed to the area while authorities worked to establish what had happened and determine the condition of those on board.
My Experience: The Sound We Heard
For me, the incident became real when I heard a very unusual sound.
At around the time I was outside, I heard a loud sound that sounded almost like thunder. It was strong enough to make me ask my neighbour what the sound was.
At first, we did not immediately know what had happened. Because of the weather and the rain in the area, it was possible to think that the sound was simply thunder.
It was only afterwards that we began hearing reports that an aircraft had crashed somewhere around the swampy area of Igbokoda.
That was when the situation became much more serious. People started trying to understand exactly where the aircraft had gone down and what had happened to the people on board.
Going Towards the Area
After the rain stopped, I went out to see what was happening.
The area where the aircraft came down is not an ordinary open field or easily accessible road. It is surrounded by waterways, vegetation and swampy terrain. Moving around such an environment can be difficult, especially after rainfall.
From the direction of the reported crash area, I could see what appeared to be a cloud or disturbance above the area.
At that point, residents were already trying to understand what had happened. The incident had quickly become the major concern in the community.
The Crash Happened in Difficult Swampy Terrain
One of the biggest challenges surrounding the incident is the terrain itself.
The reported crash location is in a swampy part of Igbokoda, close to the waterways. This makes access much more difficult than a crash occurring on a normal road, farmland or open land.
Residents in the area are familiar with the waterways and often use canoes to move through parts of the community. Following the crash, local residents were seen moving around the waterways as emergency and search teams worked to locate and recover wreckage.
Reports from the area showed pieces of aircraft debris in the water and surrounding vegetation.
Residents Gathered as Search Operations Began
As news of the crash spread, residents gathered around the riverside and other accessible areas while emergency personnel and security agencies moved towards the crash location.
Search-and-rescue operations were activated, with relevant authorities working to locate the wreckage and establish what had happened to everyone on board.
The Ondo State Government also directed relevant agencies, including emergency response and security agencies, to support the operation.
Officials Confirmed the Aircraft Crash
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed that a military aircraft had crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda. He said the wreckage had been located and that search-and-rescue operations were underway.
The Nigerian Air Force subsequently identified the aircraft as an ATR-42 and said it had been conducting a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
These official details are important because several different descriptions of the aircraft initially circulated on social media, including reports describing it as a helicopter. The aircraft was later identified by the Nigerian Air Force as an ATR-42.
Governor Aiyedatiwa Responds
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa directed state emergency agencies and relevant security authorities to support the search and rescue operation.
The governor also spoke about the difficulty of the situation and the fact that the crash occurred in his home local government area.
Residents were urged to remain calm, cooperate with emergency responders and avoid spreading information that had not been verified.
President Tinubu Orders Investigation
President Bola Tinubu expressed sadness over the crash and directed the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Presidency described the incident as a painful moment for the Nigerian Armed Forces and expressed condolences to the families of those involved.

A Personal Perspective From Igbokoda
This is not just another aircraft crash being reported somewhere far away. This happened in Igbokoda, our community.
For residents here, the sound, the movement of people, the boats moving towards the area and the sudden presence of emergency personnel made the incident very real.
Living only a few kilometres from the reported crash area makes the story even more difficult to process. What began as a strange sound became news of a major aircraft accident involving dozens of people.
The swampy environment also shows just how challenging the rescue and recovery operation can be. The location is surrounded by water, vegetation and difficult terrain, making access different from a conventional crash site.
Important Note About This Report
This article combines my personal observations from Igbokoda with information released by government authorities, the Nigerian Air Force and other credible news reports.
My account of hearing the loud sound and later going outside reflects what I personally experienced. It should not be interpreted as an independent determination of the exact time or cause of the crash.
The official timeline currently available places the aircraft's disappearance from radar at approximately 9:13 a.m. Authorities will determine the precise sequence of events and the cause of the crash through their investigation.
What Happens Next?
The focus now turns to the investigation, recovery operation and the official identification of those who were on board.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information as the investigation progresses.
Residents of Igbokoda and surrounding communities are also being encouraged to allow emergency personnel to carry out their work and to avoid circulating unverified claims or graphic material from the crash scene.
A Tragedy That Has Shocked Igbokoda
The aircraft crash has left Igbokoda and the wider Ondo State community in shock. What makes the incident particularly painful is the number of people involved and the fact that the crash occurred within a familiar part of the community.
As someone who lives here, I will continue to follow the situation and provide updates based on what I personally observe and what is officially confirmed.
May God comfort the families, colleagues and loved ones of everyone affected by this tragedy.
